The Song That Doesn't End is the closing theme of Lamb Chop's Play-Along!.

Sequence[]

At the end of each episode, after Lamb Chop said the four questions, tells Shari Lewis about her baby story and listens to the bunny's lullaby from The Runaway Bunny, the puppets and children would sing several verses of the song while hostess Shari Lewis would try in vain to stop them. They would eventually leave (on her urging), even while beginning a sixth verse (which eventually fades away). Then, Charlie Horse would return and try to get to sing the song again. However, Shari Lewis stops him successfully by putting her hand on his mouth (keeping him from singing it again, before he tries to get to sing it). And she orders him to "go away". Charlie Horse does leave (as is ordered to by Shari Lewis). But he slams the door (before Shari could tell him don't). After the door is slammed, she faces the audience with an exasperated expression and says "--door." But at least is now in peace and quiet (with Charlie, Lamb Chop, and the group gone). That is, and by extension, there are no more annoying songs going on.

Lyrics[]

This is the song that doesn't end

Yes, it goes on and on my friend

Some people started singing it not knowing what it was

And they'll continue singing it forever just because...

This is the song that doesn't end (Oh, nooo!)

Yes, it goes on and on my friend (That's enough, guys! *sighs*)

Some people started singing it not knowing what it was

And they'll continue singing it forever just because...

This is the song that doesn't end (I sing so beautiful I should sing solo/I don't wanna hurt you all/I don't wanna turn you off!/How do I turn you off?!)

Yes, it goes on and on my friend (Okay, okay. I get the joke!)

Some people started singing it not knowing what it was

And they'll continue singing it forever just because... (I can't believe it fellows/I can't believe you guys/Okay, come outside please./I've had it!/Okay that is....that is....that's it!)

This is the song that doesn't end

Yes, it goes on and on my friend (What are you doing?)

Some people started singing it not knowing what it was (Wha..../What is this?/No, stop that!/Woah, woah!/Hey, no no--this--no--that--this is the last time, right?/This is it, this is it!)

And they'll continue singing it forever just because...

This is the song that doesn't end

Yes, it goes on and on my friend

Some people started singing it not knowing what it was

And they'll continue singing it forever just because... (You think this is funny?!/Okay, fellows, if you keep on/I like you to/Go/Like to keep singing that song, then move far, far away./Go, go, go!/No-no-no, keep on going!)

(Lamb Chop, Charlie Horse, the children and Hush Puppy walk off and the song fades out.)

(Charlie Horse appears. He tries to get to sing the song again.)

(Shari Lewis zips towards Charlie Horse and puts her hand over his mouth.)

  • Shari Lewis: (covering Charlie's mouth) Charlie Horse! Oh, no, no! Stop, stop, stop! Charlie, stop! I want you to go away! Go away!

(Charlie Horse stops singing and does obey Shari Lewis. That is, after Shari Lewis lets go of his mouth after making him clean that song out of his mind.)

(Charlie Horse leaves, but slams the door.)

(Charlie Horse disappears back into the house. Despite Charlie Horse slamming the door, it is now peace and quiet for Shari Lewis. However, she exasperatedly turns to the audience and then the screen fades to black.)

Trivia[]

  • A short rendition of the song appeared in a skit on the animated TV show Cartoon Planet (the skit is also featured on the companion album, Space Ghost's Musical Bar-B-Que). Brak sings the song until he is asked to stop by Zorak, who finds it annoying. Brak explains that he is unable to because it's the "song that doesn't end." He attempts to continue until Zorak loses his temper, causing Brak to cease, remarking, "I guess it just ended."
  • Dom DeLuise from Shari's Passover Surprise said don't slam the--- door.
